Typically the DataMapper is used to convert messages that come in from one application (possibly via an adapter) into a format suitable for delivery to another application.

The Data Mapper provides support for hierarchical message structures, such as XML as well as industry standard message structures such as HL7, S.W.I.F.T, ACORD, X.12, EDI, HIPAA, NCPDP, CDISC and UN EDIFACT.

The DataMapper provides a visual representation of the message structure to allow the user to easily visualize the format of the message. The source and destination messages are displayed using a tree-view representation of the data, allowing users to work with entire branches or segments of the message by applying conversions and rules to the destination layout.
